Very interesting man, I like the use of triplets in the bassline though it is a bit repetitive. mix is crisp and clear and I love the choice of drum samples. The vocal sounds add a lot of characters to the tune. I'd say this is more dubstep than dnb though mate but who cares it's just a label

TheCon-Sept responds:

The voice in this track is the dubstep. I wanted to show people that dubstep can be done without a bass drive. When wearing headphones you can actually hear the voice sample "wubbing" I am just so tired of dubstep with too much bass. So I decided to let loose a little trick I've known about for ages. I don't know what to call it other than voice dub.

I love the intro!! just jumps straight into it and those arpeggios are awesome. Love all the different instrumentation (marimbas were a nice touch) and I love all the different progressions, they work nicely together and are always creating a sense of tension and release. I know you didn't have time to humanise the drums but I really think it would be worth going back to and doing because they're the only parts that get in the way for me. Rhythmically everything is spot on and varied too. nothin feels too repetitive, it's really well structured and it loops perfectly!!

Great job on this one dude.

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Hello!
Great to hear that you like many of the different elements in the piece. I tried to use very varied intruments, while still keeping a solid base that rolls on through the track :)
I aslo tried to work in some dynamic contrast where I could, be it rhythmically, or with volume or progression.
As for the percussion, I think I'll go back and do that some time after the competition (as well as swap out those hi-hats for better hi-hats, if I ever get my hands on any). I definitely would like to humanize the snares, at least a little bit (the gongs and cymbals are already humanized enough). I'll have to do it in seven different renders/parts too, which is nice XD

Thankyou for the nice review! I totally listened to your ambient track right when it came out. I haven't have time to review it yet, but I'll try my best to work in in there at some point not too far in the future ;)

Dark as fuck!!! You have some really interesting shit going on in this tune, like the snare decreasing in pitch, that bass that sounds like a monsters gut after Indian takeaway the kick and ride rhythm is interesting too however the tune just doesn't seem to hit hard enough for me to hear it in a club. Anyway thought it was good and different from most generic dnb on here. Could be a bit longer IMO

Pretty good dnb man, drums are punchy and have lots of variation but it's the pads that are really special for me. They simply sound great and really portray the atmosphere you're going for. The only thing that brings it down for me is the bassline. I think you could've thought outside the box a bit more - it seems a bit generic to me, and you can tell it was done on massive. I think with a little bit more experimentation this tune could be really great.

larrynachos responds:

Thanks dude! I agree with a lot of your points.

Awesome track! feels so 90s! hahahaha great job on the mix man especially. its a really catchy tune good job

D00FY responds:

Thanks dude! it's kind of a finalised demo! should have a "final" in the next few weeks!

All the notes are spot on and the drums programmings great! especially the toms however it could be mixed better. I would loosen the drums up a bit as well to give them a more natural feel, try turning off quantize and changing note velocities, especially for the hi hats and snare rolls. The tune would also sound great with more instrumentation like a bass guitar for example.

TyBurkhardt responds:

Thanks for your input! I'll get to work on that!

Yes this is heavy!!

Kelpalots responds:

One of those songs that motivate me in the mornings!

outstanding work dudes! I absolutely love the music box intro and outro and that cello sounds gorgeous. choirs really gives the tune a lot of tension and I love the electronic elements thrown in every now and then. my only gripe with the piece is the drums at the 1:00 mark, I understand you want them to be subtle so they have a bigger impact later but they sound a bit flat to me. This is just me picking hairs though the piece really is amazing.

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Hey, dude! Thanks for listening and for reviewing :D
Great to hear that you like several elements of the track. The cello and the electronic stuff were put there by demolecule, as were the percussion :)
I'm guessing you feel that they should've been louder at that point? I can't say for sure, but I think the reason they may be a bit too soft is because they couldn't have been louder with the current mix at that point. Maybe the horn should have slighty less velocity? I'm not sure how much they could be increased there anyway though :p
Thanks for the suggestion, and for the nice compliments! :3

really interesting music here dude. definately different from most, like those slidey ocal sounding melodies and the reversed drums. I give respect for the creativity and trippyness though I do think the tune lacks direction.

AnubisInc responds:

thank you for the feedback this was a fun song to make, but I definitely understand why you say that it lacks direction the song is missing some key components that could pull could the it together.

Boards of Canada style drums and synths with Tycho melodies? I enjoyed this man, very chilled and dream like, I would prefer a bit more variation with the drums and melodies and be a bit playful with some FX. I love how warm the synths sound! are you using hardware synths?

jambrother2 responds:

I'm using ALOT of emulators, analog synth emulators, tape emulators, vinyl emulators.
I'm deliberately lo-fi-ing everything up with wow and flutter, crunch, tape saturation etc.
I'm glad that it comes across as hardware, that was my intention. I'd really love to get my hands on some, and tape too, I'd kill to work with a whole analog, tape kind set up.

I really like the detuned, warped tape sound that BoC use, it just makes the whole thing feel so organic and real.

and yes, it was Boards of Cnada, Tycho less so, but i see where you're coming from.

thanks for the review!
